Dimming without flicker: the three parts that decide it

LED flicker below 30 per cent brightness comes from three components acting together: the driver inside the fitting, the dimmer on the wall, and whether the connected load sits between the dimmer minimum and maximum ratings. The wall dimmer takes the blame in most complaints and causes fewer than half of them.

Which three components decide whether an LED circuit flickers?

The LED driver sets the lowest reachable level, the dimmer sets the waveform, and the connected load in watts decides whether the dimmer can regulate at all. A circuit of four 4 W downlights on a 20 W minimum load dimmer fails on the third factor alone, at 16 W connected against a 20 W floor.

Diagnosis follows the same order on site. Measure the connected load first, read the dimmer minimum and maximum from the back plate second, and check the driver dimming range on the datasheet third. Swapping lamps before checking those three figures is the most expensive way to fix a flickering circuit.

Leading edge or trailing edge: which dimmer suits an LED load?

Trailing edge dimmers suit LED loads in any home built after 2015, because a trailing edge dimmer chops the end of each mains half cycle, runs silently and holds a smooth level down to 10 per cent. Leading edge dimmers were designed for filament lamps and stall around 30 per cent on LED.

What minimum load does a dimmer need for four 4 W downlights?

Four 4 W LED downlights present 16 W, which sits under the 20 W minimum printed on most retail dimmers and produces exactly the flicker and drop-out that occupants report. A dimmer rated from 3 W handles the same four downlights, and adding dummy load to rescue a cheap dimmer wastes 20 W continuously.

Maximum load bites on the other end. A trailing edge dimmer rated 150 W for LED is often rated 250 W for filament on the same faceplate, and the LED figure is the one that counts because LED drivers draw a high inrush current. Ten 6 W downlights at 60 W connected can still trip a 150 W dimmer if the inrush peaks above the module rating.

Write three numbers on the drawing before buying any dimmer: total connected watts, dimmer minimum load for LED, dimmer maximum load for LED. When the total is not comfortably inside that window, change the dimmer rather than the lamps.

How far down does the LED driver let a circuit dim?

The driver, not the dimmer, sets the bottom of the range. A standard dimmable driver specifies 10 to 100 per cent, while a premium driver reaches 1 to 100 per cent for about 60 to 120 AED more per fitting. No dimmer produces a level below the driver specification, whatever the dial position suggests.

One per cent drivers earn their price in two rooms. A bedroom scheme that reaches 1 per cent gives a 300 lumen fitting an output of 3 lumens, which is enough to cross a room at 03:00 without waking a sleeping partner. A corridor at 10 per cent minimum still reads as a lit corridor and defeats the purpose.

How do you detect invisible flicker without a flicker meter?

Point a phone camera at the lit surface and pan slowly across the beam: rolling dark bands on the screen show mains ripple passing through the driver at 100 Hz. IEEE 1789-2015 puts the low risk limit at 8 per cent modulation depth at 100 Hz.

Cheap constant current drivers exceed that 8 per cent limit as soon as the dim level drops under 40 per cent, which is why a circuit that looks clean at full output produces headaches at half brightness after two hours of exposure.

A spinning pencil gives a second check with no equipment. Spin a pencil between finger and thumb under the lamp: a continuous blur means low modulation, while a visible stroboscopic fan of separate images means deep modulation. Good drivers push the pulse width modulation frequency above 3 kHz, where neither test shows anything.

When should mains dimming be replaced by 0 to 10 V or DALI?

Mains dimming stops being the right answer at three points: linear runs longer than 5 metres, any requirement for scenes across one room, and any circuit where 1 per cent output matters. Both alternatives need a control pair pulled at first fix, which costs about 40 AED per drop.
